Wearing Many Hats with Faith, Family, and Agriculture

On this episode of Grit and Grace in the Heartland, Mary and Leah welcome Elissa Martin, a woman whose life beautifully blends faith, family, entrepreneurship, and agriculture.

Elissa grew up on a fourth generation ranch in Nebraska, surrounded by livestock, horses, and the everyday responsibilities that come with ranch life. As the oldest of six children and the only girl for many years, she spent her childhood helping with cattle, riding horses, and showing livestock through 4 H and FFA. Agriculture has always been part of her story.

Today, Elissa and her husband Patrick are raising four children on their acreage where horses, calves, and sheep keep life busy. Patrick trains calf roping horses, and their kids are growing up with ponies to ride, lambs to care for, and plenty of chores.

Elissa’s business journey started unexpectedly. As a young college student, she attended a Mary Kay event simply to support a family member and to buy skincare products at a discount. What began as a small side project grew into a career spanning more than twenty years. Along the way, she has built a loyal customer base, traveled across the country, and developed a strong network of friendships through the business.

One thing Elissa values most is how her work allows her to connect two very different worlds. Many of the people she interacts with daily live in cities and have little connection to agriculture. Through small moments she shares online, she helps others better understand rural life and the care farmers and ranchers have for their animals and land.

Like many women in agriculture, Elissa’s life has also included difficult seasons. Over the past several years she has faced significant health challenges while also supporting family members through injuries, loss, and other hardships. Those experiences have taught her the importance of resilience, but also the importance of grace.

Her biggest lesson is one many women struggle to remember. Taking care of yourself matters. When women ignore their own health or push through exhaustion, it becomes harder to serve the families and communities that rely on them.

Today Elissa continues to balance many roles as a mother, homeschool teacher, entrepreneur, and supporter of her family’s agricultural lifestyle. Her story is a reminder that rural women often wear many hats, and that both grit and grace are needed along the way.
